Ohio elementary schools

Become a classroom reading buddy

Give sixty minutes a week during the school day to sit with an Ohio elementary student. Together you turn pages, sound out tricky words, and build quiet confidence.

The weekly routine

What the role involves

Weekly cadence

One hour during school hours

Volunteers visit their partner school once each week between morning bell and dismissal. You meet with the same young reader every visit, creating a steady and reassuring classroom routine.

Full preparation

Schoolbooks and training provided

No teaching background is required. We furnish structured reading guides, curated grade-level storybooks, and a brief orientation so you arrive prepared for your first session.

Community partners

Neighbors from every walk

Our reading buddies include retired neighbors, university students, and local employees taking a meaningful lunch hour once a week.

Patience and steady time

Campus community hours

Flexible lunch break visits

Older adults bring warmth and patient listening to early readers who need a calm, encouraging presence to practice reading aloud.

Education and humanities undergraduates gain hands-on schoolroom experience while serving elementary schools close to their Ohio campus.

Area professionals coordinate with their employers to step away for one designated lunch period weekly to mentor a child.
